Four Saudi artists show their work at traveling exhibition

Four Saudi artists have been showcasing their work at a unique traveling biennale that has visited 43 cities in 23 countries, and concludes this week in Riyadh.

Fatima Al-Banawi, Sara Abu Abdallah, Faisal Samra and Ayman Zedani took part in the second BIENALSUR exhibition, which began in Buenos Aires in Argentina in May. Saudi Arabia is its only Middle East venue.

Ayman Zedani’s Between Muddles and Tangles features a contemplative abstract video of lights dancing across a tangle of branches and leaves.

The artwork is a meeting of the artificial and the natural, as the artist filmed the glow of a light show against nearby greenery in an unknown location in the UAE.

“It’s a cross-section of man-made and natural environments where new landscapes thrive,” he says, pointing out that insects have adapted to these disruptions by using lights to guide their paths.

In one corner of the room, the artist has set up a sort of growth lab for the desert plant Kaff Mariam (Hand of Mary), placing them under LED lights that give off the same wavelength as sunlight.

An Exhibition Of Saudi Contemporary Art Explores The Universal Elements Of Time And Space

The exhibition, which takes place at Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, displays the work of some of Saudi Arabia’s most pivotal contemporary artists

 

Three old wooden doors are inexplicably alluring. The first one is colored in a vibrant shade of turquoise yet numerous scratchings on its surface tell of years of use. The central one, unpainted and found in a light tan hue, is the most intact of all three and has a silver door handle while the third is the most battered, scratched and beaten—time has worn its originally soft surface into a battlefield of a wear and tear.

It’s become battered, discarded and devoured by the harsh desert and beaming with one last purpose through Saudi artist Moath Alofi’s work, The Doors of Thad (2019), part of the ongoing project The Last Tashahhud.

Saudi Arabia is participating in Bienalsur, the world’s first travelling contemporary art biennale, news welcomed by many, including Pope Francis, who was reportedly briefed on the event by its director, Aníbal Jozami. Works by three Saudi artists, Ayman Zedani, Faisal Samra, and Fatima Al-Banawi, are part of the biennale and will be exhibited in over 100 locations across the globe from June to October 2019.
