Athr Gallery is ushering in the new year with renowned Saudi artist Manal Al-Dowayan’s first solo exhibition in the Kingdom, which kicked off yesterday and runs for a month. The exhibition, entitled “A Journey of Belonging,” introduced the artist’s new work, as well as seminal work from her previous series, in an exploration of her frequent voyages into the past in search of understanding and mutual acceptance.
Photographer, visual poet, and artist Al-Dowayan is one of the most recognized and critically acclaimed new wave of Saudi contemporary artists. She has exhibited globally, from Belgium to Bahrain, and her artwork has been acquired by collections such as the British Museum, Nadour, Barjeel and the Jordan National Museum of Fine Art, amongst many others.

“Saudi Arabia has begun pushing for more advancement in the regional art scene. Art galleries are popping up all over the Kingdom. It may have taken a while for the contemporary art scene to fully mature but the desire for art has taken off in full force,” said Athr Gallery’s Hamza Serafi.
Art Dubai has grown from strength to strength over the course of the last six years and truly epitomizes the globalized phenomenon that is today’s art world. “Each year the fair achieves greater international reach and has become an exciting highlight in the global arts calendar,” said Serafi.

The talented Saudi artist’s show at the Athr Gallery emphasizes not only her profound achievement and success, but re-affirms the Jeddah gallery’s commitment to supporting and showcasing the most innovative and thoughtful art of the region. With the artist’s different series featured under one roof, a pattern emerges, a common thread weaves itself through her creative works. “A Journey of Belonging” allows the viewer to approach Al-Dowayan’s work from a new perspective. There is a paradigm shift in focus with controversial issues of women’s rights and identity, normally associated with the artist’s work, fading into the background and the artist’s personal fears and obsessions coming to the fore.

Art Dubai is a unique opportunity to showcase Saudi artistic talents on a global scale and shine a spotlight on Saudi artists and galleries. The event has contributed greatly not only in positioning Saudi art regionally but also on a global stage,” Hafiz added.

انّ منال الضوّيان مصورة وشاعرة بصرية وفنانة وهي واحدة من أكثر الفنانين المعروفين والمقبولين من قبل النقاد من بين موجة الفنانين السعوديين المعاصرين .عرضت أعمالها عالميا، من بلجيكا الى البحرين، وقد اشترتها المتحف البريطاني كما و اقتنت أعمالها ناظور وبارجيل والمتحف الوطني الأردني للفنون الجميلة وغيرها الكثير. انّ عرضها في أثرغاليري يؤكد ليس فقط على انجازها الحقيقي وعلى نجاحها بل هو يجّدد التـأكيد أيضا على التزام أثرغاليري على دعم وإبراز الفن المبتكر والمدروس في المنطقة.

The group of prominent artists, which includes Abdullah Murad, Asad Arabi, Fadi Yazigi, Farouk Kondakji, Ismail El Helou, Malva Omar Hamda, Mohammed Tlemat and Mustafa Ali, all arranged for their artworks to be sent for the exhibition in Jeddah while under the trying circumstances in their home country. Facilitators at Athr Gallery struggled to pull through having faced difficulties from the displacement of one of the artists in the war, alleged to have gone missing.

وتأتي مشاركة ماطر بمجموعة جديدة (صحراء فاران – آدم)ØŒ مؤلفة من صور فوتوغرافية ولوحات فنية ومقاطع فيديو تنقل قصة الصراع بين الثقافة الشعبية ومحاولة طمسها في وجه التنمية الحديثة. وقال ماطر، في لقاء صحفي مع صحيفة «Ù†ÙŠÙˆÙŠÙˆØ±Ùƒ تايمز» الأمريكية، عن مشاركته في هذا المعرض، وعن فكرة (جبل فاران)ØŒ إن هناك علاقة وثيقة تربط الهند بجبال فاران، وهي نفسها جبال مكة المكرمة، مستشهداً بحديث رواه ابن عباس، عن هبوط النبي آدم من الجنة إلى مكة المكرمة، وهبوط زوجته حواء في الهند، وحينها بدأ آدم بالبحث في الأرض عن زوجته حتى وجدها. وحاول ماطر في مجموعته أن يصور مراحل التغير التي مرت بها مكة المكرمة، وكيفية تأثير العمران الحديث على المدينة.

Artworks’ of globally renowned artists Monif Ajaj, Farouk Kondakji, Mustafa Ali, Abdullah Murad, Asaad Arabi, Mohammed Tulaimat, Ismail El Helou, Fadi Yazigi, and “Malva” Omar Hamdi are on display at the exhibition. Their artworks not only showcase variety of styles, techniques and thematic approaches but also eloquence, passion and insight of what the contemporary Syrian artists are capable of in a period of bitter political instability and struggle of freedom for Syria and its people.   The artists’ 36 artworks, comprising 28 paintings and eight bronze and wooden sculptures, were developed between 1992 to 2012 and focus on universal themes such as nature, love, spirituality and the human condition reflecting on Syria’s complex socio-political situation.

كعادتها جدة عروس البحر وعروس الفن لا يمر يوم حتى نحتفل بعرس فني في ثنايا هذه العروس التي شهدت معارض تشكيلية احتضنت أعمالا فنية أكثر من راقية فعلى صالة الشيخ عبدالله القصبي بالمركز السعودي للفنون التشكيلية افتتح معالي الدكتور خالد العنقري وزير التعليم العالي معرض «Ø¥Ø­Ø³Ø§Ø³ 3» للفنان التشكيلي فهد خليف الذي قدم الكثير من أعماله التي أشاد بها الدكتور العنقري وقال أشعر بالاعتزاز عندما أرى مثل هذا الإبداع من أحد فناني الوطن ووعد العنقري الفنان خليف بتبنيه إقامة ثلاثة معارض دولية له أولها في مدينة نيويورك.

   ÙŠØ´Ø§Ø±Ùƒ الفنان التشكيلي صديق واصل رئيس الجمعية السعودية للفنون التشكيلية فرع مكة المكرمة في بينالي الخرافي الخامس للفن العربي المعاصر بالكويت الذي انطلقت فعالياته يوم السبت الماضي الموافق 15/ديسمبر/2012Ù… بالكويت، وذلك بترشيح من قبل وزارة الثقافة والإعلام الممثلة بوكالة الوزارة للشؤون الثقافية.

At the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in the Kerala State city of Kochi, India Ink interviewed several exhibiting artists about their work, their expectations for the biennale and the politics of art. The fair will continue until March 13.
Ahmed Mater, 33, from Abha, Saudi Arabia, is showing “Desert of Pharan/Adam” at the biennale. He uses photographs, video installations and paintings to tell a powerful story of the obliteration of culture in the face of encroaching development.
